This standard (Part 1) specifies colorants that are generally recognized as safe (GRAS) for use in cosmetics, including those intended for toiletry preparations.

It consists of the following two parts:

• Table 1: Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS) List of Colorants

• Annex A: List of Substances Excluded from the Scope of the Standard

Indian standards are subject to periodic review, which may result in their reaffirmation, amendment, revision, or withdrawal as necessary.

• On February 2, 2023, the BIS issued "First Amendment (AMENDMENT NO. 1 FEBRUARY 2023)" to IS 4707 (Part 1): 2020, adding 24 ingredients to the Table 1 GRAS List of Colorants. These amendments took effect on March 1, 2023.

• In October 2024, the BIS conducted a review of this standard, and no changes were indicated. The standard, IS 4707 (Part 1): 2020, remains in effect.
