This opinion presents the safety evaluation of Basic Blue 99 in cosmetic products. Following evaluation of all available data, the EU Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety (SCCS) concludes that Basic Blue 99 is not safe for use in non-oxidative hair dye products, in light of evidence suggesting potential genotoxicity. The committee also highlights additional concerns, noting that this hair dye may be a skin sensitizer.
