This opinion presents the safety evaluation of Thiomersal and Phenylmercuric salts in cosmetic products. Following its assessment, the EU Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety (SCCS) considers thiomersal and phenylmercuric salts unsafe at the concentrations currently permitted in eye products. The committee further cautions that concurrent exposure to other mercury-containing products may increase health risks.
