On April 15, 2026, India's Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) published a notification in the Gazette of India announcing 40 new and revised Indian Standards, among which seven are relevant to the cosmetic industry. These include five newly issued standards and two revised standards, all established on March 30, 2026. For the revised standards, BIS has provided a six-month transition period, allowing the continued use of previous versions until September 30, 2026, after which compliance with the updated standards will become mandatory.
Among the revised standards, IS 4887: 2026 Petroleum Jelly for Cosmetic Industry - Specification (Second Revision) replaces IS 4887: 1980 and continues to apply to petroleum jelly used as a cosmetic ingredient. The revision expands the acceptable melting range (with the upper limit increased from 56 °C to 80 °C), introduces a mercury limit (maximum 1 ppm), and incorporates alternative methods for arsenic determination. It also updates references to related standards and revises marking requirements to reflect current regulatory practices.
