The recent whirlwind of legislative and regulatory activities in Korea has yielded a string of new revisions to its overarching cosmetic law. Most recently members of parliament proposed new changes to the cosmetic law on the 15th of October which is due to take effect three months later.
The most recent revision is just the latest in a sequence of significant amendments to Korea’s cosmetic law this year. The latest revision focuses on protecting individuals with sensitive skin. Under Korean law, people with sensitive skin fall into the following categories: infants, children, teenagers, pregnant woman and the elderly. Specific product compliance criteria for these groups are required by MFDS.
In order to ensure the quality and safety of products designed specifically for people with sensitive skin, a mandatory report must be submitted by all manufacturers or importers to MFDS. A review is conducted by MFDS to ensure the products comply with requirements.
Heightened inspection of labeling claims made on products designed for sensitive skin groups specifically claims purporting suitability for consumption by those with sensitive skin is also required by the new revisions in the cosmetic law.
