Four Highlights from the 2020 Tmall Beauty Awards

During the 2020 Tmall beauty awards, data on the performance of beauty products sold on Tmall was offered. Tmall now accounts for 30% of all cosmetics sold in China. Tmall’s beauty sector grew by 61% and had 260 million consumers in 2019. 16 beauty brands recorded over 1 billion RMB in annual turnover and over 430 thousand new products were introduced to Chinese consumers Tmall’s beauty sector continues to grow strongly despite the negative influence of COVID-19. Tmall Beauty released its “Spring Thunder Plan” to promote the development of the beauty sector, and to help support small and medium-sized beauty brands.

Livestreaming traffic increased significantly during the peak of the COVID-19 outbreak, during which the government imposed nationwide mandatory isolation measures, effectively confining China's large population to their homes for almost one month. Stay Current: China’s Cosmetic Safety Assessment Regulatory Landscape
Under the current regulatory framework, cosmetics registrants and notifiers can continue to submit a simplified version of the safety assessment report during the registration or notification process until May 1, 2025. Following this deadline, a full version of the safety assessment will be mandated. To facilitate a smooth transition, China is planning to release a set of technical guidelines.
China’s Safety and Technical Standards for Cosmetics (STSC) and Its Updates
The current cosmetic technical standard STSC 2015 specifies the cosmetics' general safety standards, prohibited/restricted/permitted ingredients and testing methods. It is revised aperiodically in response to changing trade practices in the industry. China is planning to issue a new version of STSC.
