Australia Further Delays Implementation of Cosmetic Regulation Reform to 1 July 2020

On Jan. 11, Australia NICNAS issued a notice that the implementation of the reform of Australia cosmetic and chemicals regulatory framework (AICIS) (including the national ban on the use of ingredient toxicological safety data derived from animal testing to support the introduction of cosmetic ingredients) will be further delayed to 1 July 2020, with the aim of assisting industry to adequately prepare for compliance with the new scheme.

The legislation to establish the new AICIS and set its new commencement date is now expected to be debated in the Australian Senate in the first half of 2019. Government amendments to change the commencement date will be addressed at that time.

Stakeholders shall note that the current regulatory scheme for industrial chemicals (NICNAS) will still apply until AICIS commences.
