On September 1, 2025, the Australian Industrial Chemicals Introduction Scheme (AICIS) released the Industrial Chemicals Categorization Guidelines September 2025. As part of Australia’s ongoing commitment to enhancing chemical categorization, AICIS also updated its online guide to categorizing chemical importation and manufacture as part of Australia’s continuous efforts to improve its chemical categorization. The amended Guideline is set to take effect on September 1, 2025.
Earlier this year, on February 28, 2025, AICIS published the outcome of a public consultation conducted from October 24 to December 5, 2024, to gather feedback for amending the 2025 Guideline. Key changes of the Categorization Guidelines 2025 include:
118 chemicals were added to the list of chemicals with high hazards for categorization that introducers may need to use when working out their introduction’s risk to human health and the environment.
Editorial changes (no change to regulatory requirements), such as fixed footnotes and minor text changes in some sections to improve clarity.
Annual Updates are set in September Each Year
The Industrial Chemicals Categorization Guidelines set out technical details and requirements for categorizing chemical introductions in Australia. The Guidelines will be updated annually in September to align with the AICIS registration cycle (September 1 to August 31 of the next year). Each update will incorporate publicly consulted changes, with stakeholder feedback considered before finalizing decisions. Public consultations on proposed changes generally run from September to October of the year before the updated Guidelines come into effect. Cosmetic companies are advised to stay updated on the Guidelines to categorize their introductions correctly.
