EU SCCS Assesses Safety of Heliotropin in Fine Fragrances for Adults

On April 15, 2026, the EU Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety (SCCS) issued a preliminary opinion evaluating the safety of Heliotropin (CAS No. 120-57-0) for use in cosmetic products. Public consultation will remain open through June 15, 2026.1

Heliotropin, also known as piperonal, is an aromatic compound commonly used as a fragrance ingredient in a wide range of cosmetics, including perfumes, lotions, creams, and shampoos, for its sweet, floral scent. It may also function as a fixative to prolong other scents, and as a masking agent. Currently, this substance is not subject to any restrictions under the Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009 (the Cosmetics Regulation).
