Understanding Natural and Organic Cosmetics Regulation in South Korea

South Korea’s MFDS ended mandatory certification for natural and organic cosmetics on August 1, 2025. Companies can now make such claims under a self-regulatory regime if they meet ISO 16128-based criteria and keep substantiation on file.

Effective August 1, 2025, South Korea's Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS) abolished the mandatory certification system for natural and organic cosmetics, shifting to a self-regulatory framework. Under the revised approach, companies may label and market products as natural or organic without prior government approval, provided they comply with applicable industry guidelines and maintain adequate substantiation for such claims.
