Takehome: China prepares to place tariffs on $60 billion worth of imported U.S. products amid its escalating tariff war with the US.
In consideration of USTR’s (The United State Trade Representative) initiative on August 1st to slap tariffs on $200 billion of Chinese products (25% from 10%), China Ministry of Finance released a notice along with 4 product lists on August 3rd indicating that additional tariffs ranging from 5% to 25% will be applied to 5207 imported items from the U.S., covering a total trade value of about $60 billion. However, the implementation date and follow-up measures will be subject to further notice.
Under the above announcement, numerous industries are affected including the cosmetic sector. Stakeholders shall notice that the following 10 types of cosmetic categories originating from the US will be subject to additional tariffs:

A Chronology of Recent US-China Trade War
6.15:
- The U.S. government planned to impose 25% tariffs on about $50 billion of goods imported from China and issued a specific goods list. $34 billion of which have officially been subject to additional tariffs since July 6, while the remaining $16 billion is subject to public consultation.
- At the same time, China announced it will impose the same tariff rate on the same value of products from the U.S. starting from July 6.
7.6:
- The United States officially imposed 25% tariffs on the first batch of $34 billion worth of imported Chinese products which covers 818 categories.
- China officially imposed the same additional tariffs on U.S. products.

- Trump administration announced a list and plans to impose further 10% tariffs on $200 billion in Chinese products. The decision would initially undergo public comments in August.

- USTR stated that the U.S. is about to raise the additional tariff rate from 10 % to 25 % on $200 billion of imported Chinese goods.
