    Takehome:

    • In 2016 Indonesia POM found 9071 types of illegal imported cosmetics.
    • Indonesia POM will enhance law enforcement on imported cosmetics and strengthen post-market surveillance.

Indonesia POM disclosed that in 2016 they found 9071 types of illegal imported cosmetics with a total value of more than 77.9 billion IDR. The illegal cosmetics included cosmetics containing hazardous ingredients, cosmetics without a notification number and cosmetics imported through illegal channels. The discovered hazardous ingredients contained in the cosmetics include mercury, hydroquinone, retinoic acid, red dye K3, K10 red, Sudan IV and even two pharmaceutical drugs: Clindamycin (an antibiotic which inhibits the bacterial 50s ribosomal subunit) and Theophylline (a drug used to treat asthma) both which have significant side effects.

According to Indonesian cosmetic regulations, prior to manufacture and import cosmetics must notify POM and comply with Technical Requirements of Cosmetic Ingredients including the list of substances prohibited in cosmetics. POM has destroyed 34.7 billion cosmetics without a notification number and 39 types of cosmetics containing hazardous ingredients.

Due to the large amount of illegal imported cosmetics in 2016 Indonesia POM will enhance law enforcement on imported cosmetics and strengthen post-market surveillance. Cosmetic companies are suggested to strictly comply with regulations, or run the risk of suffering huge losses and severe punishment.
