Singapore Alerts Mercury-containing Cosmetic Products

During post-market surveillance, two cosmetic products, Melati UV-Whitening Vit. E Cream and ESTHER Bleaching Cream (A) and (B), are detected to contain mercury by Health Sciences Authority (HSA) of Singapore.

During post-market surveillance, two cosmetic products, Melati UV-Whitening Vit. E Cream and ESTHER Bleaching Cream (A) and (B), are detected to contain mercury by Health Sciences Authority (HSA) of Singapore.

The packaging and leaflet of both products have no ingredient lists while the ASEAN Cosmetic Directive requires a full ingredient list labeled on the outer packaging. Besides, mercury is regulated as a prohibited substance that must not be deliberately added into cosmetic products. The maximum trace content of Hg in cosmetics is 1 ppm.

The HSA has seized the stock of these illegal products from wholesalers and their retailers. Retail outlets and online shops are warned to stop their sale and distribution, otherwise, will face a penalty fine of up to $100,000 and/or be imprisoned for a period of up to 3 years.
