South Korea to Revise the Cosmetics Safety Standard

MFDS is to designate five hair dye ingredients as prohibited.

On September 5, 2022, the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS) published a notice to solicit public opinions on the modifications of Regulation on Safety Standards, etc., for Cosmetics1. Stakeholders can send suggestions to the authority prior to September 26, 2022.

Five hair dye ingredients are to be designated as prohibited as they are possibly genotoxic following the authority's regular inspection result:

1

o-Aminophenol

o-아미노페놀

2

Catechol (Pyrocatechol)

카테콜(피로카테콜)

3

m-Phenylenediamine

m-페닐렌디아민

4

m-Phenylenediamine Hydrochloric Acid

염산 m-페닐렌디아민

5

Pyrogallol

피로갈롤

MFDS plans to enforce the modifications by the end of this year. A six-month interim period would be given to enterprises after the new Standard enters into effect.
