U.S. FDA Announces Voluntary Recall of Acne Products Due to Benzene Contamination

On March 11, 2025, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) released the results of its independent testing of 95 benzoyl peroxide-containing acne products for potential benzene contamination. This move followed third-party testing reports that raised concerns about elevated benzene levels in certain acne treatments.

Benzene, a known carcinogen found in crude oil, gasoline, and cigarette smoke, may increase the risk of cancer with prolonged exposure. However, the FDA's testing confirmed that over 90% of the tested products had undetectable or minimal benzene levels. Only six products were found to contain elevated amounts.

The affected products include:

  • La Roche-Posay Effaclar Duo Dual Action Acne Treatment (Lot: MYX46W, Exp: Apr 2025)

  • Walgreens Acne Control Cleanser (Lot: 23 09328, Exp: Sep 2025)

  • Proactiv Emergency Blemish Relief Cream Benzoyl Peroxide 5% (Lots: V3305A, V3304A, Exp: Oct 2025)

  • Proactiv Skin Smoothing Exfoliator (Lot: V4204A, Exp: Jul 2025)

  • SLMD Benzoyl Peroxide Acne Lotion (Lot: 2430600, Exp: Mar 2025)

  • Walgreens Tinted Acne Treatment Cream (Lot: 49707430, Exp: Mar 2026)

Manufacturers voluntarily recalled these products following FDA findings. Retailers have been instructed to remove them from shelves and online platforms, but no consumer-level recall has been issued. The FDA emphasized that even with long-term use, the benzene exposure risk remains very low. Additionally, the manufacturer of Zapzyt Acne Treatment Gel initiated its own recall after detecting similar benzene contamination in internal testing.

In the coming months, the FDA intends to publish comprehensive test results, including data and information on testing methods. Manufacturers, distributors, repackagers, and importers are reminded of their obligation to ensure product safety and conduct validated testing for contaminants. The agency also cautioned that unvalidated third-party testing methods may produce inaccurate results, leading to consumer confusion.
