CFDA Consults on Testing Methods for Prohibited or Restricted Subs in Cosmetics

On 15 Mar 2013, China’s CFDA started to invite public comments on the testing methods for some prohibited and restricted substances in cosmetics, including 15 nitroimidazoles and 27 UV filters. 

On 15 Mar 2013, China’s CFDA started to invite public comments on the testing methods for some prohibited and restricted substances in cosmetics, including 15 nitroimidazoles and 27 UV filters. Methods for testing fluoride ion, iodide ion, epinephrine, norepinephrine, Isoproterenol, etc. are also released for consultation.

Traced content of prohibited or restricted substances is one of the thorny problems during the safety evaluation and monitoring of cosmetic products or ingredients. The difficulty lies in the method to identify them and how to figure out the limit quantity under which they would be safe to use.

Hygienic Standard in Cosmetics 2007 includes all the substances banned or limited to be used in cosmetics and also the related testing methods:

However, some testing methods have been out of date and insufficient to meet the current needs already. In recent years, the CFDA has been making constant efforts to develop more efficient, feasible and scientific testing methods in order to facilitate the detection of toxic or hazardous substances that may remain or be intentionally added by illegal manufacturers.
