Hidden Risks Behind the Red: Sudan Dyes and Their Global Cosmetic Bans

Sudan dyes (I–IV) are associated with genotoxic/carcinogenic risks and are prohibited in cosmetics in China and most countries and regions globally.

Recently, the third-party testing organization DaddyLab reported the detection of Sudan IV in certain cosmetic products, suggesting that the substance may have been intentionally introduced through ingredients. However, in China, Sudan IV (CAS No. 85-83-6) is explicitly listed under the Inventory of Prohibited Ingredients for Cosmetics as a banned substance. This discovery has sparked discussion within the industry and raised public concern.
