China NMPA Releases Supplementary Testing Method for Sudan Dyes in Cosmetics

On January 12, 2026, China's National Medical Products Administration (NMPA) released a new supplementary testing method, BJH 202502 Determination of 4 Components Including Sudan I (CI 12055) in Cosmetics. This new method comes in response to an industry-wide scandal in late 2025 where Sudan dyes, which are prohibited ingredients, were detected in certain cosmetic products. It expands the testing scope to a wider range of product categories and establishes stricter detection limits. The method is effective from the date of issuance.

The method is applicable for the determination of the following four Sudan dyes.
