Malaysia Targets Cosmetic Product Containing Scheduled Poison

Malaysia National Pharmaceutical Control Bureau (NPCB) is targeting a cosmetic product circulating on its domestic markets that contains high levels of mercury and has warned the public to avoid the product.

The company responsible for placing the product in the market has been instructed to immediately halt the sale and supply of the product and remove all stock from the market within 72 hours.

Furthermore, NPCB stressed that possession of this product is an offence under the Control of Drugs and Cosmetics Regulations 1984. Anyone who commits an offence under these regulations can be fined up to a maximum of RM 25000 and/or face imprisonment for a term not exceeding 3 years. For a second or subsequent offence offending parties are liable to face a fine not exceeding RM 50000 and/or imprisonment for a term not exceeding 5 years. A company found guilty can be fined up to RM 50000 for the first offence and fined a maximum of RM100000 for a subsequent offence.
