Takehome:
Taiwan FDA decided to ban micro plastic beads used in cosmetics in 2016 (see news on CL) and has now detailed the exact restrictions.
Rather than issuing a blanket ban, TFDA has clearly defined the prohibited usage conditions and drawn a clear line in the sand stating that micro plastic beads smaller than 5mm are not permitted for use.
Products within the micro plastic beads prohibited scope |
Products of shampoo and the like |
Products of body wash and the like |
Product of facial cleansing and the like |
Products of soap and the like |
Products of facial scrub |
Products of toothpaste |
Products within the scope of permitted bead usage should ensure that product labels include the following information:
Solid beads: XXX (detailed ingredients)
Or solid beads: XXX larger than 5mm
Or the product doesn't contain micro plastic beads
This information was released during an internal conference, but TFDA encourage manufacturers or/and distributors to diminish the use of micro beads in advance before official provisions are enacted.
