Thailand Revises Cosmetic Ingredient Use Requirements: Two Ingredients Added and One Revised

On July 3, 2024, the Thai Food and Drug Administration (Thai FDA) officially approved the amendments to the country's cosmetic ingredient lists, following a period of public consultation that lasted from February 22, 2024 to March 7, 2024. Effective on July 4, 2024, these amendments align Thailand's cosmetic regulations with updates to the ASEAN Cosmetic Directive adopted during the 38^th ASEAN Cosmetic Scientific Body (ACSB) Meeting.

Details of the amendments are as follows (changes to the previous lists are indicated in red):

1. Adding a new entry of Diethyltoluamide (DEET) in the List of Prohibited Ingredients. ¹

For nano-form ingredients, avoid using them in applications that may lead to exposure of the end user’s lungs by inhalation.
Nano-form ingredients are permissible if they meet the following criteria:
- Purity ≥ 97 %
- Median particle size D50 (50% of the number below this diameter): ≥ 50 nm

In addition, Thailand's cosmetic committee has introduced labeling requirements for products containing this newly added sunscreen ingredient. For such products, the following warning statements must be printed on the label in Thai. ³

Discontinue use and consult a doctor or pharmacist if any adverse reactions occur.
