Tmall Global Accelerates to Introduce Overseas Brands into China

On September 23, Tmall Global released its “Service Partner” plan as part of Alibaba’s “Five Year $200 Billion” import plan. In the next half-year, Tmall Global will cooperate with 100 services companies to introduce 1000 overseas brands into China. [1]

A director from Tmall Global said: “In the past, brands mainly entered Tmall Global in three ways, overseas business development, industrial invitation, and brand self-application. This plan helps more overseas brands find more ways to build connections with Tmall.” [1]

Series of services being planned

-          Simple entry and review process

To help overseas brands seize the biggest growth opportunity of Double 11 this year, Tmall Global has further simplified the merchant entry process and set up one-on-one Chinese and English investment promotion assistants to provide merchants with one-stop services; it also optimizes the review and entry registration process to shorten the time for brand opening a Tmall store from 30 days to 15 days over the next half-year.

-          C2M customized services

Tmall Global also has cooperated with brands to promote C2M customization services for consumers. For example, platforms, service partners, and brands have jointly nurtured new products in baby skincare, natural ingredient makeup, plant-based beverages, and men's skincare sectors based on the latest consumer demand shown in Tmall Global data.

-          Live-streaming services

Tmall Global has also cooperated with live-streaming service providers to build official live streaming bases. These live-streaming bases is where companies could hold their live-streaming. At present, more than 1,000 overseas brands have joined the official live-streaming bases of Tmall Global in Hangzhou, Chengdu, and Changchun. The live-streaming transactions have exceeded 100 million RMB. Next year, more live-streaming bases will land in ten cities across the country, including Hainan and Shanghai.

Alibaba’s “Five-year, $200 Billion” import plan

On November 6, 2018, at the first China International Import Expo (CIIE), Zhang Yong, CEO of Alibaba Group, announced a new Alibaba’s "big import plan" to achieve global imports of 200 billion US dollars in the next five years.

2020 is the second year to achieve this big goal. Clearly, the outbreak of COVID19 didn’t stop or slow down that plan.

In January, Tmall Global released the 2020 list of popular brands, and the brands in this list can enjoy quick-entry.

In April, Tmall Global announced the establishment of a merchant development center to match service providers for overseas brands entering China for the first time and provide an overall operation plan for overseas brands to achieve 90 days of operation capacity upgrade. [2]

Also, in April, Tmall Global’s "1 billion profit transfer plan" included a 15% reduction in bonded order processing fees on the whole; besides reducing or exempting bonded warehouse rents in February, Tmall Global continued to cut the April-June inventory fee for merchants. Meanwhile, Tmall’s international logistics speeded up 15%.[3]

And this month, the new “Service Partner” plan is underway to prepare more overseas brands for the Double 11 shopping festival coming soon.
