On August 9, 2024, the Central Drugs Standard Control Organization (CDSCO) of India announced a significant update to the cosmetics registration and import process. Under the new directive, companies submitting applications through the Sugam online portal will be limited to a maximum of 50 products per single application. They are also allowed to submit multiple applications.
This change, which has been in effect since August 16, 2024, is designed to streamline the registration and importation process, improve efficiency, and ensure that applications are processed within the timelines stipulated by the Cosmetics Rules, 2020. As per these rules, the Central Licensing Authority is required to review the submitted application documents for import registration, and then either issue an import registration certificate or reject the application with written reasons, within six months.
Impact on the Cosmetics Industry
While the new restriction may necessitate adjustments in application strategies for cosmetics companies, it is expected to lead to faster processing and more efficient regulatory compliance.
