Japanese Company Apologizes for Adverse Effects Caused by its Cosmetics

On 5 Dec, Daiichi Sankyo Healthcare Co., Ltd., the subsidiary of Daiichi Sankyo Company Limited (a leading pharmaceutical company in Japan) made apology to the public for the cosmetics adverse effects including skin itching, swelling and rash caused by its “DERMA ENERGY” series products.

CFDA Alerts 6 Cosmetic Products Containing Banned or Restricted Substances

On 2 Dec 2013, CFDA released a list of whitening and hair dyeing cosmetic products which failed spot checks conducted by provincial FDAs in Hebei, Jilin, Fujian, Shandong and Hunan provinces. A brightening cleanser produced by Avon was found to contain Phenol, a substance prohibited under the Hygienic Standard for Cosmetics 2007.

Kanebo’s Whitening Product Scandal Urges Japan to Strengthen the Reporting System of Cosmetics Adverse Effects

Japan MHLW decided at a meeting held on 27 Nov to strengthen the reporting system of adverse effects of cosmetics and quasi-drugs, in light of the Kanebo’s skin-whitening product scandal. Cosmetic companies in Japan will be required to report the adverse reactions of cosmetics within 15 days

More Mercury-tainted Skin-whitening Cosmetics Discovered in Philippines

7 skin-whitening cosmetic products with high level of mercury were discovered in Davao City by the EcoWaste Coalition and IDIS. One of the illegal products even contains mercury up to 6,633 ppm, more than 6,000 times the limit (1 ppm) set by the ASEAN Cosmetics Directive.

Kanebo Skin-whitening Products are Recalled across Asia, except Chinese Mainland Market

Under the current regulatory framework, cosmetics registrants and notifiers can continue to submit a simplified version of the safety assessment report during the registration or notification process until May 1, 2025. Following this deadline, a full version of the safety assessment will be mandated. To facilitate a smooth transition, China is planning to release a set of technical guidelines.
