6 Cosmetic Testing National Standards to be Revised

The Standardization Administration of China announced it will revise the first batch of national standards for the testing of cosmetics in 2014, specifically defining the testing methods of 48 substances in cosmetics including of 11 penicillin antibiotics, 15 fluoroquinolone antibiotics, 5 heavy metals, 7 sex hormones, astragaloside, paeoniflorin, phillyrin and forsythoside etc.

Acceptance of Episkin Model in China Facing an Uphill Struggle

The significance of the Episkin model is that it could establish an alternative to animal testing for cosmetic products and ingredients and raises the possibility that such alternatives can entirely replace animal testing as the method used to verify the safety of cosmetics and cosmetic ingredients in China. However the usage and acceptance of the Episkin model is fraught with many problems.

CFDA Announces 66 New Testing Institutions for Domestic Non-special Use Cosmetics

On August 12 2014, CFDA released the appended list of testing institutions sanctioned to conduct testing on domestic non-special use cosmetics. 66 testing institutions were reviewed by provincial FDAs according to Notice on Administrative Measures on Filing of Domestic Non-Special Use Cosmetics and approved as the designated testing institutions to undertake the testing of domestic non-special use cosmetics.

China Officially Accepts Domestic Non-special Use Cosmetics without Animal Testing

On 16 Dec, CFDA published the breaking adjustment of registration of domestic non-special use cosmetics and whitening products. Mandatory animal testing has been officially removed for domestic non-special use cosmetics.

A Series of Testing Standards for Cosmetics Issued

On 6 Sept, China Standardization Administration published the Announcement 17 of 2013 which contains 19 testing standards mainly for prohibited and restricted substances in cosmetic products and 4 product standards regarding lotion, hair dye, shampoo and facial cleanser, respectively.

SFDA Plans to Establish a Risk Monitoring and Early Warning Platform for Cosmetics and Health Food

Stay Current: China’s Cosmetic Safety Assessment Regulatory Landscape
Under the current regulatory framework, cosmetics registrants and notifiers can continue to submit a simplified version of the safety assessment report during the registration or notification process until May 1, 2025. Following this deadline, a full version of the safety assessment will be mandated. To facilitate a smooth transition, China is planning to release a set of technical guidelines.
